how to be the best client!

How to be the best client, an admittedly unusual topic for a travel blog. I want to take you behind the scenes of being a travel consultant. My major focus is luxury hotel bookings. The purpose of this blog post is to help you understand my work process when I receive a booking request. My goal is always to provide you with the best and most efficient service possible.

Hotel booking requests are not created equal. Take a look at three representative samples:

1. The best requests are very specific about what the client wants.

"I'd like to book a Deluxe City King for the two of us at Four Seasons New York for a three night stay, 5FEB-8FEB. I see from the hotel's website that it's an average $497 per night with Third Night Free. Assuming the third night free rate comes with Preferred Partner amenities, go ahead and book it using my Amex card ending in xxxx."

This request scores an "A" in every way! You researched our hotels and their amenities on Virtuoso.com (or our google maps) and did some price checking on the internet. Your request clearly indicated the desired hotel, dates of stay, room category, bed type, and number of guests. All I have to do is make the booking and email you the confirmation. You get what you want, often within 5 minutes of your request.

Note: my best clients are often amazed at how quickly I can fulfill their booking requests — but you get a lot of the credit!

Even were a request like this to come in last minute, we always love to get this kind of email.

2. Some clients have a good idea what they want but just want our help to help them find it.

"I'd like to spend next weekend in New York, 5FEB-3NT, and I'd like to book a boutique hotel on the Upper East Side. I can pay about $500 per night, and I want a hotel that provides Virtuoso amenities.

This request scores a solid "B+" because you're giving us enough information to help you right away. I enjoy consulting with my clients, sharing my expertise, and helping you find the right hotel. When you're this clear about what you want, things go much more efficiently. This request communicated unambiguous dates, the neighborhood you want, the style of hotel you prefer, and your desired price point.

With one quick email, I can list some possibilities for you. You can select one of the options, and you can often get a confirmed booking within the hour!

3. Some requests frustrate me because they're extremely vague.

"We might be going to New York next weekend. What do you have?"

How much time do I want to invest in the kind of request? This question requires a massive amount of time, and I might never make a sale (because they're not even sure if they're traveling). Believe it or not, I get emails like this all the time. The starting grade is "C," and it can go down from there.

Fact: We get amenities at about four dozen hotels in New York — 24 Virtuoso hotels and another couple of dozen hotels with Starwood Luxury Privileges and Travel Leaders Select amenities.

Fact: I will not quote all the rooms and suites at four dozen New York hotels and list our amenities. That's too much work for me and too much data to be useful for you.

I'll respond by asking some questions:
  • What are your exact dates?
  • Do you have a particular neighborhood in mind?
  • Do you prefer the larger luxury chains? Are you looking for a smaller, boutique hotel?
  • How many guests will be in the room? How many beds?
  • Do you want a room or a suite?
  • Do you have a price point in mind?
If I get a reply answering those questions, my next email will outline two or three options.

Hopefully, I'll get a quick reply, choosing one of those options. Because so many emails were required to get to this point, it could be several hours from your initial email before you get your reservation.

If I don't get a timely reply (i.e., it takes hours or days to get back to me with a booking request), the grade definitely goes down to "D."

If the client never makes a booking request after I've invested all this time in research and communication ... that scores an "F." You'd be surprised how often that happens.

Hopefully this provides insight into how to be the very best client! Great communication on your part helps me provide you with the great hotels values I specialize in.

car-free first Sundays on the Champs Elysées

Imagine a rainy April afternoon on the Champs Elysées, umbrella-toting pedestrians walking down the sidewalks, looking into the shop windows, gazing up the incline to the Arc du Triomphe. What would this scene look like with the streets free of automobile traffic, with the entire wide avenue open to shoppers and tourists.

You won't need to imagine much longer. Coming soon are car-free "first Sundays" on the Champs Elysées. The avenue will be transformed into the most glorious pedestrian mall in the world. Free of the noise and exhaust of cars, visitors to Paris will be able to stroll freely down the entire length of the street, from the Arc de Triomphe in the west to the Place de la Concorde in the east.

It all begins April 3, 2016 and every first Sunday thereafter. Here's hoping the experiment works!

Where should you stay if you want to walk the Champs Elysées? The three closest Virtuoso hotels are Fouquet's Barriere, the Lancaster, and La Reserve (designated by the three red dots from left to right on the map below).

There are many more great hotel choices within a few blocks of the Champs Elysées — Four Seasons George V, Prince de Galles, Plaza Athenée, and Le Royal Monceau. But don't book your Paris hotel online; check out the great Virtuoso amenities you can get from a Virtuoso travel consultant — typically for the same price you're seeing online. Free breakfasts, hotel credits, room upgrades (some guaranteed at booking), etc. The perks differ by property, but check them all out at Virtuoso.com.

P.S. — We get even better-than-Virtuoso perks at Four Seasons George V, Le Meurice, Plaza Athenee, Peninsula Paris, and Mandarin Oriental Paris.

how to turn El Niño into cash

A very inventive hotel promotion just came across my desk. As you may know, there's a huge El Niño brewing in the Pacific, and we're getting LOTS of much needed rain here in Northern California.

Meadowood Napa Valley has created a way for you to turn that rain into cash. Book a stay at Meadowood right now, and should it rain at any point during a stay until March 31st, they will offer you a $150 credit per night to put towards a spa treatment in their brand new, just opened spa.

One of my very favorite resorts in the Napa Valley, Meadowood is a member of Virtuoso, meaning you'll also get these added-value perks when you book through your Virtuoso travel consultant:
  • Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
  • A $50 credit towards daily breakfast in The Grill or via room service for up to 2 in-room guests
  • $100 Spa credit
  • A beautiful box of 9 handmade chocolate truffles made by a chocolatier in Yountville
  • Early check-in/late check-out subject to availability
Interested in a romantic weekend at Meadowood? Give me a call, and hopefully you and your beloved will be singing in the rain!

This beautiful You Tube video depicts the decoration of the Christmas tree at The Merrion in Dublin. The short film is set to the song "I Wanna Go Home," sung by Michael Buble. If you'd like a three minute break, just click on the video above.

The Merrion is located in central Dublin, close to Trinity College and the Book of Kells. If you next trip to Ireland takes you to Dublin, I highly recommend this Virtuoso partner hotel — especially the rooms and suites in the Georgian Main House. Just by booking through a Virtuoso travel consultant, you receive a complimentary daily full breakfast for two guests ... and if you book a Main House room, you'll also receive a complimentary lunch or dinner for two.

Ireland bound? Feel free to get in touch for other great places to stay (all with amenities) in Dublin and around this beautiful country.

a warm place in the sun this winter!

Winter is coming, and while lots of folks LOVE snow sports, I always got depressed when I lived in the mid-Atlantic states and winter started to D-R-A-G. Nothing like flying south to enjoy a warm place in the sun, playing golf or tennis, walking the beach, or just sitting by the edge of the pool reading a novel on your iPhone.

There's a warm place in the sun for you this winter at Four Seasons Punta Mita, on the west coast of Mexico, only 45 minutes north of Puerto Vallarta. One of the most fabulous beach resorts I've ever visited, there are two large beaches (one for active beachgoers and the others who want to soak in some peace and quiet sitting in the shade of the palm trees.

And as a Four Seasons Preferred Partner travel consultant, we can provide added value to your stay at FS Punta Mita (or at any Four Seasons in the world). While contractural obligations prevent me from publishing the amenities online, suffice it to say that you will pay the same price you see online but save literally hundreds of dollars from the free add-ons that we can get you. Just drop me a line, and I'll send you all the details of the FS Preferred Partner program.

Ritz Paris | spend the night starting March 14, 2016

This is the hotel opening that I'm most excited about. After being closed for several years undergoing a thorough (and much needed renovation), the Ritz Paris is now taking reservations beginning as early as March 14, 2016.

I have enjoyed two stays at the Ritz Paris and appreciate its wonderful location right on the Place Vendome as well as the warmth of its service. If you loved the old Ritz, you'll love the new Ritz, as they've tried to keep the traditional ambiance of this iconic hotel. Even the original furniture has been preserved and completely renovated. The only difference will be the new, larger rooms and completely up-to-date systems — including fibre optic internet.

Don't miss out on the best set of Virtuoso amenities I've ever seen — just book through any Virtuoso travel consultant ... and we have absolutely no booking fees.
  • guaranteed room upgrade at the time of booking
  • complimentary roundtrip airport transfers
  • VIP greet at the airplane door
  • complimentary fiber optic internet access
  • complimentary daily breakfast for two at L'Espadon

where to get a shower and hot meal at CDG

So why did I put this terminal map at the top of a blog post? Simple: so I can have easy access to it when I arrive in Paris at 11:35 a.m. Wednesday morning.

My trip to Scotland begins Tuesday afternoon when I board Air France's A380 double-decker jet from SFO to CDG, from where I connect to another Air France flight to Edinburgh. We actually have a 4 hour layover in Paris, which isn't bad news in this case. Charles de Gaulle can be a difficult airport in which to make connections. The signage can be difficult, and the terminals are not exactly filled with smiling Air France agents proactively offering assistance to confused and jet-lagged travelers [irony intended].

With four hours to spend and business class tickets that we scored with Delta SkyMiles (thanks PointsPros), we'll have a chance to enjoy some time in a lounge. Our goals:
(1) take hot showers
(2) possibly get a spa treatment
(3) enjoy a hot lunch
(4) recharge our portable electronic devices

I obsess over logistics, which probably means I'm in the right profession (travel consultant), so I've already researched the pertinent information for our connection — thanks to the FlyerTalk community for their assistance.
(1) Our arriving flight will arrive in Hall L or M.
(2) Our departing flight will depart from Hall K or Hall L.
(3) There is an Air France Lounge in each hall, and each has showers.
(4) Only Hall K and Hall M lounges offer hot food.

I've displayed all of this information graphically in the image above, and I'll have the top page of my blog open in Safari on my iPad before I leave San Francisco. When I get to Paris, I'll have this clear, full-color graphic readily available.

Four Seasons Oahu | now taking reservations

Following up on one of my top ten takeaways at #VirtuosoWeek, I'm pleased to announce that Four Seasons Oahu at Ko Olina is now taking reservations for stays beginning June 1, 2015. This is Four Seasons fifth resort in Hawaii.

Here are ten reasons to stay at the FS Oahu, 30 miles west of the airport ... far from the madness of Waikiki Beach.

1. The video above shows the resort's lagoon setting by the Pacific Ocean.
2. 346 spacious guest rooms average 640 square feet, all with balcony
3. Lots of dining options with five restaurants and bars on property.
4. A full spa offers 16 treatment rooms to spoil yourself.
5. Complimentary Kids for All Seasons program for children ages 5 to 12 years.
6. Three distinct pool areas.
7. Enjoy water sports, beach activities, tennis, and golf.
8. Tour Pearl Harbor.
9. Introductory Fourth Night Free offer.
10. Preferred Partner amenities.

While I cannot post the Preferred Partner amenities on a public website, just drop me an email, and I'll get back to you immediately with all of the value-added details I can offer you as a Four Seasons Preferred Partner travel consultant.

#VirtuosoWeek top ten | Best of the Best book

This is number ten of my "top ten list" from Virtuoso Week.

Actually, it's a tongue-in-cheek accolade to Virtuoso's annual hotel catalog, The Best of the Best. An index to the more than one thousand, one hundred Virtuoso hotels and resorts around the world, it's a fun video parody of Apple's minimalistic advertisements for its fabulous iPhone, iPad, and Mac products.

But there's something better than the book. Check out Virtuoso.com/hotels, always completely up-to-date with every hotel in the network. Unlike the book, the website contains each hotel's complete list of Virtuoso amenities and promotions.

Never heard of Virtuoso? It's literally a secret in full sight, an indispensable resource for savvy travelers searching the web for the best prices and money-saving amenities at luxury resorts. Virtuoso should be your first thought whenever you reserve a room at a five star resort. Sure you can do it yourself, but you're missing out on a better deal.

How do I find the Virtuoso amenities for my favorite hotel? Begin by clicking on Virtuoso.com/hotels to begin your search. Type in a country, a city, part of a hotel's name, an airport code. You can even use * as a wildcard character, and the search engine understands boolean arguments.

As great at the book might be, the website is honestly much more powerful, always up-to-date with all the new additions, and available 24/7 anywhere you have an internet connection. Virtuoso.com can even point you to your very own Virtuoso travel consultant who specializes in your travel destination... or just email me.

#VirtuosoWeek top ten | how to see the Taj Mahal

This is the fourth of my "top ten list" from Virtuoso Week. Oberoi Amarvilas is the best luxury hotel in Agra; nothing else even comes close. Here are four reasons to stay at Amarvilas when you journey to India to see the Taj Mahal.

1. The resort's golf buggies whisk you from the door of the hotel right to the entrance of the Taj Mahal (and not just to the barricade 100 meters away).

2. You can purchase your Taj Mahal tickets right from Oberoi's concierge — saving you the ordeal of standing in a long and crowded queue. No other hotel in Agra provides this service.

3. Direct views of the Taj Mahal delight guests from every room and suite in the hotel.

4. Receive exclusive amenities for your stay when booking through a Virtuoso travel consultant. A room upgrade if available on checkin, complimentary full breakfast for two daily, a one-time complimentary lunch for two, and early check-in, late check-out subject to availability... these are the valuable perks our clients enjoy.

#Virtuoso Week top ten | FS Oahu at Ko Olina

This is the second of my "top ten list" of takeaways from this year's #Virtuoso Week where I'm on the lookout for great travel ideas. Although not "yet" a part of Virtuoso, FS Oahu will have FSPP amenities from Day One!

Just one week until reservations open The opening of reservations has been postponed at FS Oahu at Ko Olina. I had lunch with my Four Seasons Hawaii rep on Sunday. She told me that the website is going live August 18, but that date has been pushed back. The opening date is expected to be in April, 2016, but we'll know for sure hopefully soon.

Occupying the former JW Marriott, Four Seasons has undertaken a complete renovation of the resort. Existing guest rooms are large — 640 square feet — and of the total 358 rooms, 52 will be suites. There will be five restaurants on property including a seafood restaurant.

Located on a protected lagoon with clear water and calm waves, Four Seasons looks across the lagoon to Disney's Aulani. This will be the first Four Seasons resort on Oahu and the fifth in Hawaii. The other four are FS Hualalai (Big Island), FS Maui, FS Manele Bay (Lana'i), and FS Lodge at Koele (Lana'i).

More news will be forthcoming, including the Four Seasons Preferred Partner amenities that guests will receive at FS Oahu when booking through your FSPP travel consultant. Although I'm not permitted to publish these amenities, please email me for my guide to the FSPP amenities at every Four Seasons hotel and resort worldwide.

#VirtuosoWeek top ten | breakfast canal cruise

one of Amsterdam's traditional Notaris boats

This is the first of my "top ten list" of takeaways from this years #VirtuosoWeek. I'm listening for some great travel ideas.

Had breakfast this morning with two representatives of De L'Europe, one of our Virtuoso hotel partners in Amsterdam. We were discussing, among other things, what to do in Amsterdam. The top three attractions in Amsterdam, I surmised, were the Anne Frank House, the Van Gogh Museum, and the Rijksmuseum.

Thomas suggested a favorite activity that I had never thought of... an early morning, private breakfast cruise on one of Amsterdam's Notaris boats. Begin your canal cruise early. Just before dawn, the canals are uncrowded, the water is still, and the soft pre-dawn light is perfect to photograph the beautiful reflections of Amsterdam.

Notaris boats (same root word as in "notary public") refer to a time when Amsterdam's lawyers wore tall hats. The high cabin ceilings permitted attorneys to keep their hats upon their heads while in the boat ... and also to doff their hats when a lady entered the cabin.

De L'Europe is the only Amsterdam hotel in the historical district with direct access to the canals. We can arrange your breakfast cruise, and you can board your Notaris boat from the hotel's dock on the canal. And don't forget to book through your Virtuoso travel consultant to receive the Virtuoso amenities for your stay:
  • Guaranteed upgrade at time of booking (up to Junior Suites)
  • Daily full breakfast, for up to two in room guests
  • One 3-course lunch or dinner in Hoofdstad Brasserie for up to two in-room guests (exclusive of beverages and gratuities)
  • Early check-in/late check-out subject to availability
  • Junior Suites & Above receive One Way Airport Transfer

Ritz Carlton Lake Tahoe | summer family vacation

When I woke up this morning and looked out the window (shortly after 6 a.m.), I could not believe the beautiful light of the mountain dawn. So I quickly dressed and went outside to capture what I could of the "golden hour." I was a bit late, but the light in this picture is just magical. Be sure to click the picture to see a full-size image.

Ritz Carlton Lake Tahoe is located mid-mountain at Northstar, a family-friendly ski resort just a bit more than three hours from the Bay Area (unless you wait until everyone else is driving up to Tahoe for the weekend, in which case three hours can easily turn into five ... so leave at 10 a.m., if you possibly can).

Great summer weather — sunny skies, clear blue skies, shirtsleeve temperatures (sounds strange to say, but San Francisco and East Bay residents will know what I'm talking about). Clean mountain air, great hiking, and mountain biking opportunities galore. Also great food! Last night I had the seared Hawaiian Sea Bass at the signature restaurant Manzanita, and it was phenomenal.

Consider Ritz Carlton for summer vacations with kids. There are lots of young families with kids playing in the heated pool, and this is a very kid friendly resort. One little girl was thrilled that the family's guest room had her personal "tent" set up for her arrival.

Your Ritz-Carlton STARS travel consultant can provide additional value for your stay — daily complimentary buffet breakfasts for two adults ... all for the same price you'd pay if you book it yourself on the web.

The Merrion | Dublin's finest hotel

The Merrion is Dublin's finest hotel, located in the heart of the very walkable downtown area of Dublin and close to Trinity College (the Book of Kells), the National Gallery of Ireland, as well as tempting shopping opportunities. The Main House is comprised of a row of gracious Georgian townhouses that have been converted into guestrooms and suites, and there is a modern Garden Wing built around a spacious garden courtyard behind the Main House. I really recommend rooms in the Main House for their traditional interiors and sense of history.

Although I had seen the Merrion's art collection in its public spaces during prior visits, I had no idea of the significance of the collection. The hotel has done something quite special, creating an audio guide to help guests more fully appreciate the works of art that grace the walls. Watch the video (above) to get a sense both of the hotel and its collection of art.

For even great value, book through your Virtuoso travel consultant to enjoy complimentary Full Breakfast for two daily and upgrade if available upon arrival. Guests booking a room in the Main House will additionally enjoy a complimentary lunch or dinner for two while Garden Wing guests receive cocktails and appetizers for two in the Cellar Bar.

traveling to Greece? just charge it!

photograph by Mstyslav Chernov, published in Wikimedia Commons

Traveling to Greece in the near future? Currency worries have been on travelers' minds lately, but Brownell travelers in Greece have reported to their travel consultants that everything is fine. Foreign-issued credit and debit cards are freely accepted in hotels and restaurants. Because ATM machines may have run out of cash, bring Euros or dollars with you for tips and small purchases.

If you're into airline miles, charge whenever you can for the points... and be sure to use a No Forex card.

a guide to Hong Kong hotels

Statue of Hong Kong Film Awards, Ave. of the Stars, Kowloon (c) 2015 David Ourisman

Hong Kong is one of the world's most interesting cities. Whether you're traveling there for business, or just using HKG as a hub to elsewhere in Asia, it's worth an extended stay. Where should you stay when visiting Hong Kong?

Here are the questions I ask my clients:

1) Do you want to be on Hong Kong island itself ... or on Kowloon? Hong Kong is the old city with its narrow streets, small shops and restaurants, and the world's longest outdoor escalator. Kowloon is contemporary with modern shopping centers, and it boasts killer views of Hong Kong over Victoria Harbour (see my picture above).

2) Do you prefer traditional Asian hotels ... or contemporary hotels?

3) Do you want a view of Victoria Harbour from your room?

4) Do you want to be in Central? Or another way of asking the question: how comfortable are you with the subway system?

With these questions in mind, here are my tips on where to stay in Hong Kong:

Peninsula Hong Kong has recently finished a thorough renovation, and the results are absolutely stunning. A traditional hotel, located in Kowloon, many guests enjoy the sheer luxury of round-trip airport transfers in a Rolls Royce and the uniformed Peninsula doormen who open the doors when you enter its magnificent Lobby. Rooms in the tower have commanding views of the harbour.

Four Seasons Hong Kong is one of the finest city hotels in the world with superb service, large and beautiful rooms, and a great view of the harbour. FS Hong Kong is the only hotel in the world with two three-star Michelin restaurants, and the rooftop infinity pool overlooking the harbour is something special.

Mandarin Oriental Hong Kong is located right in Central. A traditional Asian hotel with dark carved wood decorating the lobby ... and its Harbour Rooms come with a coveted view of the harbour.

Ritz Carlton Hong Kong has the distinction of being the highest hotel in the world. Occupying the top floors of the tallest building in Hong Kong, you're sometimes above the clouds! The Club Lounge has wine on tap ... and the Island Harbour View rooms have a birds-eye perspective on Victoria Harbour.

InterContinental Hong Kong has the best view of all. Located in Kowloon right on the boardwalk, guests staying in Harbour View rooms have an unobstructed view of the harbour and Hong Kong beyond... a perfect place to sit and watch the evening light show (while listening to the music through your in-room TV).

Upper House is a special hotel. The lobby feels like a living room, and guest rooms are extremely spacious and beautiful. Located a couple of subway stops north of Central, if you're comfortable using public transportation, this could be the place for you in Hong Kong.

Tip: for a better-than-internet deal, book these hotels through a Virtuoso, Four Seasons Preferred Partner, Peninsula Pen Club, Mandarin Oriental FAN Club, Ritz Carlton STARS travel consultant for free breakfasts, upgrades, hotel credits, and more.

what color would you like your tulips?

photo from wikimedia.org, used under the Creative Commons license

This is a story about great, over-the-top customer care offered by the ladies and gentlemen of Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain.

I recently booked a weekend stay for a couple celebrating their wedding anniversary. One of the perks I can offer my clients as a Ritz-Carlton STARS travel consultant is a customized welcome amenity or service. I asked the husband what could make their stay extra special. His wife loves tulips, he said, and he would love to surprise her with a vase of tulips in the room upon arrival.

Ritz-Carlton loves doing special things to make their guests feel special, so I passed this request on to my Guardian Angel. Her response was that she would love to have tulips delivered to their room ... and what special color would she prefer? (Answer: lavender)

It brings a smile to my face to anticipate the pleasure that this simple welcome amenity will provide my clients on their stay at Ritz-Carlton Dove Mountain.

UPDATE: the hotel also placed lavender tulips throughout the lobby and restaurant for their stay!

travel in the age of EasyJet | a 4-part strategy

graphic from easyjet.com which should thank me for the free link

A client wanted to plan a trip to Athens, Mykonos, and Santorini. He contacted me this Tuesday for his dates in June ... and I soon discovered that every hotel he was interested in was totally booked. There was no space whatsoever for his dates at the Grand Bretagne or the King George in Athens. Choices in Mykonos and Santorini were extremely limited. Quite a frustrating experience, as he was ready to book a trip ... so he decided to postpone.

Europe is crowded these days ... and a big reason for this is that it's so cheap and easy for Europeans to fly around the continent. Just hop aboard a discount airline, and be in Paris, London, Rome, or a Mediterranean beach destination in little more than an hour. And if you can get there for 26.99£ as EasyJet's website promises (see above), why not!

You need a strategy to plan your trip to Europe.

1. Book early. 60 days is not enough lead-time to plan a trip to the Greek Islands in June, as my frustrating Tuesday impressed on me. Start 330 days ahead. Think hotels as soon as you start booking your award tickets. You'll have more availability, and you'll also put a ceiling on the rate you pay; flexible rates can always be lowered!

2. Explore less well known destinations. Rome, Venice, and Florence are always crowded; ever felt like a sardine packed into the Sistine Chapel? When you go back to Italy, visit lesser known destination such as Verona (where you can see Juliet's balcony), Sicily, and Puglia. Avoid the thundering herds of tourists and encounter a more authentic side of Italy.

3. Employ private guides and drivers. Pricey, yes, but knowledgeable local guides can save you time, your most precious asset. Why stand in queue to buy tickets or get through the front door? Our Virtuoso on-sites can even arrange after-hours tours of many attractions. Imagine having a private candlelit dinner at the Library of Celsus in Ephesus ... after all the crowds have left, a memory that will last a lifetime! Or book a VIP skip-the-line tour of the Eiffel Tower or Paris Catacombs.

4. Take advantage of local experts. Your Virtuoso travel consultant has a network of local experts practically everywhere on earth. These ladies and gentlemen have the experience and connections to craft a memorable European vacation, sparing you much of the stress encountered by those in the back of an EasyJet.

Andaz Maui | sleek, trendy, and modern

Sleek, trendy, and friendly are the first three words that came to my mind when I stepped into the open-air lobby of Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort, located just north of the Shops at Wailea. Designed to give a sense of a modern Hawaiian beach house, this totally renovated resort was created within the existing walls of the former Renaissance. With 297 rooms and suites, the resort has five swimming pools open 24 hours (including one adult-only quiet pool), two full service restaurants — Ka'ana Kitchen and Morimoto Maui, three other more casual dining options, as well as a Spa. Complimentary services include a Kids Program, pool chairs and umbrellas, loungers on the beach, as well as everything non-alcoholic in your minibar. Wifi throughout the property is free and fast.

I spent one evening in an Andaz Ocean View Suite (a lot of space with 850 square feet). Because all of the regular guest rooms were completely occupied during my stay, I did not have a chance to inspect these rooms. However, the bedroom portion of my suite had pretty much the same size and design as guestrooms, I am able to make some observations.

Rooms are clean and simple, almost minimalistic. Cool white plaster walls, cool Ambrato marble tile floors, whitewashed oak paneling with teak furniture and walnut trim, white shuttered doors between the bedroom and bathroom. The bathroom has floors and walls of grey lava stone tile, two square sinks set in a wide teak slot vanity, deep oval soaking tub, and a shower whose glass wall can look out into the bedroom and the view outside your windows. Each room and suite has a private balcony.

I was particular impressed by the Premier Suite, the next category up from my Ocean View suite, with 1500 square feet  of living space. A bit less minimalistic than guest rooms and lead-in suites, I found this Suite attractive to my aesthetic. For families, I can totally recommend a 2BR, 3BR, or 4BR Villa. These large Ocean Front accommodations directly face the Pacific, with full kitchens and washer/dryer.

You have a sense of space at Andaz Maui. With five pools and a wide and open green lawn leading up to the beach, there's plenty of room for all guests. Although all beaches on Hawaii are public, the only access to the Andaz's beach is through the resort, and there were just a handful of guests relaxing in the sun. Even though the resort was 98% full the evening I was there, I never had the sense that the place was overrun with guests.

Your Virtuoso travel consultant can provide you with added value for your stay at Andaz Maui, including full breakfast for two daily and a $100 spa credit — in addition to an upgrade if available at check-in.
