St Paul de Vence is an ancient walled village high in the hills overlooking the Mediterranean Sea. Beautiful views, beautiful light ... and beautiful art everywhere you look. In fact, the French painter Marc Chagall (who was born in Russia but became a French citizen) spent many years of his life in St Paul de Vence. We saw his tomb in the village's small cemetery this afternoon.
Lots of shopping opportunities, but much fine art (Chagall, Picasso, Miro), artisan jewelry, and even one shop with museum quality archeological artifacts for sale. A very worthwhile destination, I recommend visiting during shoulder season, mid-week, to avoids the hordes of tourists on the one small street. Things were fine for us on a Tuesday in October!
There's a walking tour available from the tourist information office — one hour at 7€ per person and well worthwhile. You'll learn the history of the town, walk around the village, see Chagall's tomb, and visit the chapel with its original art (tickets are normally 4€ but are included in the tour). As an added bonus, we found out the name of the best gelato store in town from our guide. It's Dolce Italia, right around the corner from the church. Turned out to be a good recommendation!
