Napa Valley is home to some superb resorts including Meadowood, Calistoga Ranch, Carneros Resort, and Auberge du Soleil. I've had great stays at each of these properties and can heartily recommend each of them to the right guest. Each is so different, but these are five star resorts with five star pricing.
Andaz Napa is a four-star alternative, right in the heart of downtown Napa. A cute little town on the Napa River, it's growing up but has a lot to recommend it — including Grace's Table (a friendly bistro that's a Michelin Bib Gourmand award recipient - 1400 Second Street) and the Artists of the Valley Gallery (a collective owned and operated by 40 local artists - 1307 First Street).
A boutique hotel built in 2009 and taken over by Hyatt in 2011, Andaz exudes a casual style. There is no front desk, and the Concierges work in front of a huge map of Napa County showing the location of many of its most popular vineyards. Just 141 rooms, lead-in standard King rooms are cozy (300-325 sq ft) and offer an especially good value at the price ... but I'd go for a Loft Room (pictured here), so much more space for just a bit more in price.
