the Danube — Budapest at sunset (c) 2018 by David Ourisman, all rights reserved |
Planning a river cruise on the Danube? I recommend double-checking with the cruise line ... and researching alternative travel plans just in case. Europe's hot, dry summer has resulted in record low water levels on the Danube. The river has been too low for some riverboats to embark on a planned cruise. Some of my colleagues report that clients have arrived in Europe, only to discover their cruise had just been cancelled (or the itinerary altered).
You'll have more and better choices if you plan ahead proactively. We all hope for the best, but plan for the worst. Call the cruise company. Ask for up-to-date information about potential cancellations. What alternatives can the cruise line offer you if your cruise does not sail?
Turning lemons into lemonade. If your river cruise cannot sail and you choose to get a refund, what's on your European bucket list? Consult with your travel advisor and work on an alternative itinerary, just in case.
