kids fly nearly free ... to Tahiti

Now's the time to plan your family's next vacation... Where? in Bora Bora! Air Tahiti Nui's Kids Fly Nearly Free promotion offers exceptional values for families. Up to two children up to the age of 15 pay only the taxes when flying with their parents. Round-trip fares from LAX start from $1,649 per adult and $101 per child from Los Angeles to Papeete, and the kids fare from LAX to BOB is only $131 round-trip.

Why Bora Bora? It's one of the most idyllic destinations on earth with the most beautiful lagoon anywhere. Imagine a week in your own private overwater bungalow with nothing but gorgeous shades of aqua-blue-green out your window. Slip off your own private deck into the warm, clear waters...

We can make this so easy peasy for you... Our trusted partners will put together a complete package that includes "kids fly nearly free" on Air Tahiti Nui and our exclusive amenities at resorts throughout Tahiti. Is there any reason not to book that trip to Bora Bora today?

Tahiti non-stops from San Francisco

picture yourself in French Polynesia (c) 2017 by David Ourisman, all rights reserved

Flying to Tahiti will get a lot easier beginning next October 30. United Airlines has announced nonstop Dreamliner flights from San Francisco to Papeete. Flying three times a week (Tuesday, Thursday, Sunday), United plans serve this route from October 30, 2018 through March 28, 2019.

Why I'm excited by this news:

You can avoid LAX, a monstrously inconvenient place to connect. Domestic flights arrive at one of eight terminals, and you have to schlep yourself and your baggage to the international terminal, check in again with Air Tahiti Nui (which means leaving airside), and go through security again (plan for a long wait in line). If you plan to check bags, you'll have to see if your domestic airline has an interline agreement with Air Tahiti Nui.

Flying through SFO will be a dream by comparison. Being a United hub, you'll have easy connections from all over the US with your bags seamlessly checked all the way through to PPT. Passengers can walk between United's domestic and international gates without having to go through security again. And SFO offers a choice of lounge experiences — the American Express Centurion Lounge or United's Polaris Lounge.

The timing of the flights is bit disappointing. The outbound flight departs SFO at 2:45 p.m., arriving PPT at 9:25 p.m. Because this is too late for connecting Air Tahiti flights onto Bora Bora or Moorea, you'll have to overnight in Papeete; I recommend the InterContinental Tahiti. The return, departing PPT at 11:45 p.m. and arriving SFO 10:50 a.m. the next morning, is fine.

However, the "season" for which United is flying the route makes no sense — from October 30 until March 28. This is "summer" in French Polynesia, the rainiest and most humid time of the year. The best months to visit Tahiti begin in April when you'll enjoy the driest weather and most comfortable temperatures. Oops! Guess someone at United failed to check the "high season" for Bora Bora and Moorea.

I've been twice ... so please contact us to plan your dream trip to Bora Bora and ask about the value-added Virtuoso and Four Seasons Preferred Partner amenities. We can save you hundreds of dollars on your trip of a lifetime.

want a personal travel shopper?

I'll be attending Virtuoso Travel Week at the Bellagio in Las Vegas.

Shopping for travel can be very confusing. While Google is where many people begin to plan their next vacation, most people quickly become overwhelmed. Google the word "travel," and you'll get 1.19 billion results!

So consider us your personal shopper for travel. We can cut through millions of possibilities and help you plan the trip of your dreams. Whether you want an African safari or a bespoke trip that lets you experience the real China, a driving trip through the south of France or a relaxing vacation in Bora Bora, we can help ... because we've been there!

We will save you time, money, and frustration. If a beach vacation at Four Seasons Hualalai or Four Seasons Maui is capturing your fancy, we'll save you hundreds of dollars — with complimentary daily breakfasts and a hotel credit good toward a lunch or dinner. We can provide similar amenities at over 1200 luxury hotels and resorts around the world. It won't cost you a penny extra to book luxury hotels through us, and you typically pay at check-out, exactly the same as if you booked online.

Along with thousands of other Virtuoso travel advisors — and three other members of Team Ourisman, I'll be at Virtuoso Travel Week next week. It's not a vacation — it's work. I'll literally be shopping for you, listening for what's new and exciting and building relationships with our travel partners who help make your vacation special.

Is travel on your mind? Just click on our website and send us your travel request. While our response may take a bit longer than usual, as we'll be in meetings and networking from 6:30 a.m. until well past [normal] bedtime), we'll get back to you as soon as possible to help you Discover More in your travels.

girl on the train

girl on the train (c) 2017 by David Ourisman, all rights reserved

Photographic opportunities are everywhere, this time on a BART train from North Berkeley to Powell Street station in San Francisco. I liked the way the light caught the profile of this young woman also riding BART into the city, and the camera in my iPhone 6SE did the rest.

Four Seasons hosted a group of travel advisors this afternoon at a lunch-and-meet with sales managers from a number of FS properties around the world. Among the highlights of what I learned:

Private jet from Los Angeles to Bora Bora. It's surely expensive, but if you want the ultimate luxe, this is your ticket. Board your Gufstream G550 private charter at Van Nuys airport and fly directly to Bora Bora. Skip the international airport at Papeete. Skip the long queues at immigration. You'll clear customs in no time at the BOB airport and immediately be whisked away by yacht to the resort. Charter flights for a party of 12 guests start at $160,000, plus accommodations. I believe this fare is round-trip and averages $13,333 per person, so worth considering for the ultimate in convenience and comfort. (There are also a few scheduled charters you can book into).

Book Once, Stay Twice. Participating properties are the Four Seasons resorts in Anguilla, Costa Rica, Nevis, and Punta Mita. Book a Festive Season stay at any of these for stays between 15DEC and 7JAN. (You'll benefit from the Preferred Partner amenities for this stay). As an added bonus, you'll receive three complimentary nights between May 1 and December 15, 2018 at any of the three participating resorts.

Here are the terms and conditions:

This offer is available for new holiday season bookings made between now and June 30, 2017

The holiday season stay must take place between December 15, 2017, and January 7, 2018, inclusive, at a choice of Four Seasons Resort and Residences Anguilla, Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo, Four Seasons Resort Nevis or Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita. Length of holiday season stay requirements vary by property.

Upon completion of the holiday season stay, guests will receive a certificate with details on how to book their complimentary 2018 stay.

The complimentary 2018 stay will be a three-night stay at choice of Four Seasons Resort and Residences Anguilla, Four Seasons Resort Costa Rica at Peninsula Papagayo, Four Seasons Resort Nevis or Four Seasons Resort Punta Mita.

Complimentary 2018 stays must take place between May 1 and December 15, 2018, and are subject to availability.

To reserve a holiday stay and take advantage of the Book Once, Stay Twice offer, guests or their travel professionals must book by calling the Tropical Collection Resort of choice directly before June 30, 2017.

Book Once, Stay Twice offer cannot be combined with other offers or promotions.

lost night in paradise | who pays?

beautiful lagoon waters (c) 2017 by David Ourisman, all rights reserved

Who pays when something goes wrong on your vacation? One of the travel blogs that I regularly follow, Ben Schlappig's One Mile at a Time, relayed the sad story of a missed night during a couple's honeymoon. Their flight from Moorea to Bora Bora had a stop at Huahine. There it suffered a mechanical breakdown and was unable to continue to their final destination. Ten hours later, Air Tahiti sent a replacement plane, but due to high winds in Bora Bora, the plane was unable to make the flight until the next morning.

So they missed their first night in Bora Bora at a (very) expensive resort, and they lost the amount they had paid for their first night at the resort.

Question: how could they have protected against this?

Answer: travel insurance

Problem: travel insurance policies are not created equal

We work almost exclusively with Travelex, Brownell's preferred travel protection partner for many years. I spoke with a telephone representative of Travelex this morning, and I asked her about the particular situation I read about on Ben's blog. She told me the following.

Trip Interruption coverage would have been activated by a delay of a Common Carrier caused by a mechanical breakdown, weather delay, or strike. Such a policy benefit would have covered their unused travel arrangements resulting from this delay up to 100% of the amount of cancellation protection and Trip Interruption purchased (for a Travel Basic policy) or 150% of the interruption protection purchased (for a Travel Select or Travel Max policy). [language revised 12:08 p.m. as suggested by Laura Heidt]

What about the travel insurance from your credit card? The devil's in the details, so I checked out those details. American Express Platinum does not include a travel interruption component. Citi Prestige offers travel interruption coverage if you miss "more than half of [your] Trip because of missed connections, delayed departures, etc." Citi Sapphire Reserve states that interruption coverage does not apply from "Common Carrier caused delays, unless they are as a result of an organized strike that affects public transportation." Visa Signature provides neither Trip Cancellation nor Trip Interruption coverage.

Let me stress that you should rely only on the representations of your travel insurance carrier for their authoritative answers to what would or would not be covered by your policy.

travel and terrorism

http://www.hemenwaystreet.com/2012/08/wild-precious-life.html?showComment=1348280588715

[Note: the disappearance of EgyptAir Flight 804 early this morning happened subsequent to the publication time of this article].

Terror strikes infrequently and randomly, and that's the essence of its horror. There's no predicting when or where a psychopathic individual will attack, and every incident becomes a cause for worry. Different folks, of course, respond differently.

But I'm not going to stop traveling! Traveling and travel photography are the passions of my life, and I always proceed with the assumption that "lightening doesn't strike twice." Terror depends on unpredictability. Once it's hit a certain place, I believe that place becomes the safest place in the world for quite awhile, as the authorities there are on full alert while the terrorists go back into hiding.

Travel Weekly contains an insightful article by Richard Turen. He cites some interesting statistics about terrorism, starting with the fact that (in 2011) only 17 U.S. citizens were killed by terrorist acts (and that figure includes civilian deaths in war zones). Here's his [abridged] list of the statistics about how unlikely an individual is to die from a terror incident. Statistically, you're...
6 times more likely to die from hot weather
8 times more likely to be killed by a police officer
404 times more likely to die from a fall
1,048 times more likely to die in a car accident
23,528 times more likely to die from obesity
But here's an even more important reason to keep on traveling and doing the things we love. We have, in the words of Mary Oliver's poem, one wild and precious life to live. We go around just one time on this magical experience called life. If you wait until all risk is gone, you ensure only one thing: that you'll never make it to Paris, London, Bora Bora, or any of the other places on your bucket list!

Travel the world ... and Discover More!

overwater or beach bungalow?

view from beach bungalow at Velaa Private Island, the Maldives

Clients frequently ask me about overwater bungalows at ocean resorts in the South Pacific — at destinations like Bora Bora, Fiji, and the Maldives. There's something romantic about the notion, and American tourists in particular really want to stay overwater.

The concept was invented by Hotel Bora Bora. Blessed with the best natural beach on the atoll, the resort built a limited number of bungalows along the beach. But because there's only so much beach frontage, the resort created additional guestrooms by constructing boardwalks out over the water leading to bungalows on stilts.

overwater bungalows at Six Senses Laamu, the Maldives
Overwater bungalows were an instant hit, and everyone started copying them. Most of the rooms in Bora Bora are overwater, and I observed the same phenomenon during my recent trip to the Maldives. The advantage to living overwater is that you can slip from your private deck directly into the warm ocean water to swim, snorkel, or lounge.

I'm a contrarian on the matter. Given the choice, I'd prefer to stay in a beach bungalow. Why? The photo at the top of this article says it all. Guests in this beach bungalow at Velaa Private Reserve walk out their back door to a private pool, their own little stretch of beach, and the clear, turquoise ocean water. Besides, I'd rather get into the ocean from the beach where the water is shallow.

Given a choice, I'd choose a beach bungalow every time!

Bora Bora | overwater honeymoon bungalows

view from the beach at FS Bora Bora  — (c) 2015 by David Ourisman, all rights reserved

Where to stay in Bora Bora? I've enjoyed two different visits to this idyllic atoll with its incredible blue-green water, and while there's a resort for most every budget, here are my impressions of the three resorts I visited during my December trip to Bora Bora.

Four Seasons Bora Bora is by far the resort I am most frequently asked about, so I was glad to be able to spend a day last December. Only 5 years old, the resort is beautiful and will only become more impressive as the extensive landscaping matures. FS Bora Bora has a warm, informal elegance with a contemporary Polynesian feel.

There are 100 overwater bungalows and 7 beach bungalows. The OWB we were shown was spacious with separate bedroom and living room.  Rooms are decorated using natural light woods on the walls, darker wood floors, and bamboo ceilings. Connecting bungalows are available for families.

But the best part was the beach — large and uncrowded — and you can swim and snorkel in the various inlets and the coral garden. We spent the afternoon between the beach and the spa — heaven!

Other features are an impressive spa, complimentary laundry facilities, free programs for children and teens, and a wonderful Relaxation Room that guests can use if their bungalow is not ready in the early morning when their flight arrives.

Book through a Four Seasons Preferred Partner to get even more value for the same price!

InterContinental Thalasso is a five star "trendy" option on Bora Bora (with a bar designed by Philippe Starke). Public buildings are constructed with coral rock, providing a sense of place, and natural woods are used extensively in the interiors. The spacious guest rooms have a contemporary feel with a cool color scheme using quiet, subtle shades of blue and grey. The best part of the design: your bed directly faces a floor-to-ceiling glass window with a dramatic view of Bora Bora's incredible lagoon. Book an Otemanu Diamond room for the most breathtaking views when you wake up each morning.

Why consider IC Thalasso? The top reason is the spa! The Thalasso Spa uses sea water for treatments, and if you book a treatment, you get the use of the innovative spa facilities for the entire day. (Or you can buy a day pass, but a treatment is just slightly more).

The food is wonderful (we enjoyed our lunch), and prebook one of the 14 tables at Corail, Thalasso's new signature restaurant with Michelin-starred chef.

InterContinental Moana is a good choice for price conscious honeymooners on a four star budget. IC Moana is an intimate four star resort with a family ambiance and a traditional Polynesian feel, more relaxed and "comfortable" than Thalasso's "trendy" styling. It is located on Bora Bora's central motu, great if you'd like to explore the island and eat dinner at Bloody Mary's or the exquisite La Villa Mahana.

Just 50 overwater bungalows and 12 beach bungalows, each is 36 square meters in size. Rooms are very pleasant with rattan walls and bamboo ceiling beams. Bathrooms have an open-air shower that may appeal to some! A sliding door can close between the living room and dining room, and the sofabed can accommodate one child in an OWB or two children in the beach bungalows.

5 reasons to cruise on the Paul Gauguin

view of Bora Bora one morning aboard the MS Paul Gauguin

Is a Paul Gauguin cruise in your future? This was our second visit to French Polynesia — and also our first time ever on a cruise ship. Here are five reasons you might want to consider a cruise on the MS Paul Gauguin for your honeymoon or anniversary trip to Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea, and French Polynesia.

1. You pack and unpack just once. No living out of a suitcase as you visit from island to island.

2. Your logistics are taken care of. Cruising is the easiest way to get from island to island without having to deal with airports and ferry terminals. From your arrival in Tahiti to your departure, someone else is dealing with all of the hassles.

3. Control over costs. Most everything is included on the Paul Gauguin — your cabin, all of your meals, cocktails and wines at meals, even gratuities. Shore excursions, spa treatments, and premium wines are extra.

4. Meeting fellow travelers. You're onboard with 300 or so fellow passengers who, like you, love to travel. It's easy to meet people, start conversations, and make friends.

5. Access to quality tours at every port. Paul Gauguin will offer excursions at every port, or you can arrange your own.

Voyager Club amenities. On some Paul Gauguin cruises, you benefit from Virtuoso's Voyager Club amenities — a $150 shipboard credit or $175 towards the purchase of other Virtuoso products in connection with your cruise. Just book through your Virtuoso travel consultant, or email Sarah@ourismantravel.com for immediate personal attention.

my stay in a floating hotel in Tahiti

Actually, the title of this article may be a bit deceptive. I was invited on a educational trip aboard the Paul Gauguin as it sails on a seven night Tahiti and Society Islands cruise. Actually, if anyone would like to take the same cruise and meet me, we'll be departing PPT on 13DEC and returning 20DEC, and fares are as low as $3,995 per person.

I've never been on a cruise before, although I did enjoy a barge trip in Southern France aboard L'Impressioniste. I'm frankly not a cruise person, but I'm willing to give it a try. I will of course share my impressions, comparing my experience aboard the Paul Gauguin cruise to the luxury hotels I enjoy frequenting.

So why this cruise? In addition to an opportunity to take my wife back to Tahiti (she loves snorkeling in the warm waters of the atolls), I'm looking it as an opportunity to do some site inspections of hotels I didn't get to see back in 2007. Here's my original site inspection report, very much out of date as a new hotel has opened (Four Seasons Bora Bora), two hotels have closed (Hotel Bora Bora, Bora Bora Lagoon), Bora Bora Nui is now a Hilton, and St. Regis Bora Bora is now Virtuoso (it wasn't in 2007).

Le Taha'a Island Resort. A Virtuoso property close to Bora Bora, I've booked it but never seen it. We'll spend a couple of hours there the morning of December 15th.

Four Seasons Bora Bora. This resort was still under construction during my last visit (click here to see a picture I took from the water), but we'll be spending a day there on December 16th. FS is picking us up at the dock at 10 a.m. and returning us at 4 p.m. We'll get to see rooms, enjoy the beach, have lunch, and we've even booked spa treatments.

InterContinental Thalasso (on Bora Bora) is owned by the same company that owns Paul Gauguin cruises, and we'll be seeing it on December 17th.

InterContinental Moorea also has the same owner as the Paul Gauguin cruises. We'll be visiting this property the morning of December 18th, followed by an afternoon site inspection of…

Hilton Moorea. There are really two recommended properties on Moorea, and this will give me the opportunity to see both in a single day — quite helpful in helping clients consider their choices on Moorea.

What about cruising aboard the Paul Gauguin as a way to visit Tahiti? It's certainly economical, as all meals and beverages are included in the price of the cruise — and you only have to pack and unpack once while you enjoy visits to Huahine, Taha'a, Bora Bora, Moorea, and Papeete.

book Virtuoso resort packages online *

Classic Vacations is an excellent Virtuoso tour company that specializes in luxury vacations, and most* (but not all) Classic Vacations packages include Virtuoso amenities . But there's a rather significant requirement: your booking must be made through a Virtuoso travel consultant.

But you can make the booking yourself. Classic Vacations has provided me with a personalized website through which my clients can price out and book vacations. These can be resort-only, or you can add flights or a rental car to the package. Any vacation package booked through this link will be identified as coming from Ourisman Travel, and you will be eligible to receive Virtuoso, Ritz-Carlton STARS, or Four Seasons Preferred Partner amenities when applicable.

NB: I need to emphasize that not all Virtuoso hotels provide the amenities when booked through a wholesaler such as Classic, Pleasant, Island Destinations, etc. In particular, please be aware that the Four Seasons resorts in Hawaii need to be made via direct booking; Preferred Partner amenities are not extended through wholesaler bookings at Maui, Hualalai, Manele Bay, the Lodge at Koele ... or Punta Mita in Mexico. To get the FSPP amenities at these resorts, you'll need to book directly through a FS Preferred Partner travel consultant.

Want to be in charge of your own booking? Try it out! Research a vacation, price out the different options, create a courtesy hold — and then contact me. I'll help you sort out the insurance options and look into "bulk" airfares that can often be a better value. Sometimes just a few dollars more than the lowest published fare, bulk fares are flexible, refundable airfares that don't have to be paid for until 45 days before departure. I'll also want to double-check with the resort that what you want to book is eligible for Virtuoso amenities which include:
  • a room upgrade upon arrival, subject to availability
  • complimentary breakfast for two daily
  • an additional amenity (such as a $100 F&B credit or Spa credit)

So where do you want to go next? Hawaii, Bora Bora, the Caribbean, Europe? Check out my personalized mini-site on Classic vacation...

* Important: Most (but not all) Virtuoso member resorts will honor the Virtuoso amenities when booked through Classic Vacations. It's essential that you verify with your Virtuoso travel consultant before finalizing your reservation.

Tahiti vacation guide

Moon Travel Guides have been published for a vast array of destinations; there are literally dozens of destinations available. I was offered the opportunity to review the Moon Handbook Tahiti and received a review copy that was thoughtfully autographed by the author, David Stanley. This encyclopedic guide to the islands of French Polynesia would be especially useful to travelers wanting to visit the smaller and less-visited islands, as there does not seem to be a spot that Stanley has left unexplored in his travels. Readers will learn about the history and geographical highlights of each island along with a discussion of attractions, sports and recreation, accommodations, and food — as well as logistical details on how to get there and how to get around once one has arrived.

One of the most useful features of the book is a discussion of various accommodations available to visitors. Stanley's site inspections not only discuss the quality of the rooms but provides invaluable information about the quality of the beach and snorkeling at various resorts as well as alternate nearby dining possibilities. Example: "The Sofitel Moorea la Ora Beach Resort ... sits on one of the finest beaches on the island with a splendid view of Tahiti (but poor snorkeling)." However, the book (just published in February 2011) is not up to date. The cyclone that hit Bora Bora a year earlier destroyed the Bora Bora Lagoon Resort and severely delayed the renovation of Hotel Bora Bora; this information is not reflected in his discussion of these two Bora Bora resorts.

If you're planning Tahiti, Bora Bora, Moorea, or any of the other islands of French Polynesia, Stanley's Tahiti vacation guide pulls together a wealth of knowledge into one comprehensive handbook.

full solar eclipse | July 11 in Tahiti

As if you needed another reason to visit one of the most idyllic spots on earth, French Polynesia will experience a total solar eclipse on July 11, 2010. A solar eclipse occurs when the new moon passes directly in front of the sun, blocking out its light and creating a mystical "twilight in the middle of the day" experience. According to Nasa's eclipse website, "the southern coast line of French Polynesia's Tahiti lies a tantalizing 20 km north of the eclipse path and experiences a deep 99.96% magnitude partial eclipse at 18:28 UT."

Tahiti and Moorea will experience a 98% eclipse of the sun. There is room availability on both islands that evening, and you can spend the rest of your Polynesian holiday on Bora Bora. The warm waters of its lagoon are the most incredible shade of aquamarine, and this is one of the best places on earth to snorkel. My recommended places to stay? Four Seasons Bora Bora (the ultimate five star resort with a distinctly Polynesian flavor) and Bora Bora Lagoon Resort (an Orient Express property with reasonable prices and the best snorkeling anywhere).

Never look directly at the sun. The only time that the Sun can be viewed safely with the naked eye is during a total eclipse, when the Moon completely covers the disk of the Sun. It is never safe to look at a partial or annular eclipse, or the partial phases of a total solar eclipse, without the proper equipment and techniques.

South Pacific cruises | 45% off + free air

Tahiti is one of my favorite destinations on earth, and Paul Gaugin Cruises is offering 45-50% off its 2010 cruises. And if you book by March 31st, you will receive free airfare from Los Angeles to Papeete on cruises 10 nights or longer. Book a 7 night cruise, and receive two-for-one airfare. A third person in your stateroom sails free (for designated staterooms).

Why consider a South Pacific cruise? The South Pacific offers some of the clearest, most inviting seas in the world, and you'll enjoy fabulous snorkeling and beautiful sunsets. Cruise options include the Society Islands (Tahiti, Moorea, Bora Bora, etc.), the Cook Islands, Figi, Tonga, and more. One cruise even visits New Zealand.

Paul Gaugin has all oceanview staterooms and suites (no windowless inside cabins), and nearly 70% provide private balconies. With only 332 guests, you'll enjoy gracious service, and virtually everything onboard is included: all onboard gratuities; complimentary beverages including fine wine and premium spirits; free in-suite mini-bar; complimentary 24-hour room service; lectures and entertainment. Enjoy fine dining at one of three onboard restaurants — L'Etoile, Le Grill, and La Veranda.

Planning a honeymoon or family trip in 2010? Get in touch to plan your luxury cruise with Paul Gaugin Cruises.

the best time to visit Bora Bora

Bora Bora is an atoll in French Polynesia, a South Pacific atoll of breathtaking beauty. Being in the Southern Hemishpere, however, its seasons are the opposite of those in the Northern Hemisphere. In other words, when it's winter at home (Dec - Jan - Feb), it's summer in the Southern Hemisphere. This means hot weather and humid, rainy conditions in Bora Bora.

While the best weather is during the winter months -- June, July, and August -- the very best time to visit Bora Bora is during April or May. The weather is more comfortable than during the height of summer, the humidity is reduced, and the summer rains are over. Best of all, as the crowds have not yet arrived, you'll enjoy uncrowded resorts, low season rates, with an excellent chance of an upgrade!

Bora Bora's hotels are among the world's most unique luxury properties. Featuring overwater bungalows, guests can slip out of their private bungalow directly into the warm clear lagoon waters and enjoy some of the best snorkeling anywhere. Honeymooners and couples seeking romantic getaways will love the luxury and secluded tranquility of Bora Bora, just 8 hours from LAX. Where to stay? Check out this blog for my hotel reviews, and then contact me for the best possible rates along with exclusive Virtuoso amenities that include daily breakfasts, upgrades, and other valuable perks.

how to plan a romantic honeymoon

So you're engaged, and now you're planning a romantic honeymoon to begin your married life together. You may find that planning this trip is very stressful because there are too many choices! Do you want to take a cruise or spend a romantic honeymoon at a beach resort in a tropical paradise?

Where do you want to go? The world offers so many honeymoon destinations: Hawaii. Capri. Costa Rica. Tahiti and Bora Bora. Fiji. The Maldives. Mexico. Jamaica or the Caribbean. Do you want an all inclusive vacation? Do you want a totally flexible package?

This is perhaps the one time in your life when all these choices are not welcome. You're in the midst of countless decisions about your wedding, and you're getting frustrated by them. You are discovering that the two of you may have different decision-making styles, different priorities, even different expectations. You've had to deal with disagreements and conflict around your wedding ... and now you have the trip of a lifetime to plan. Both of you want it to be the most wonderful, romantic honeymoon ever, but you can't agree on anything. What's a happily engaged couple to do?

Here are some tips on how to plan a romantic honeymoon and keep your love intact!

1. Keep it simple. You'll want to avoid frequent packing and unpacking. Who wants the hassles of traveling to a dozen destinations on your honeymoon? This is a time for you to be together and enjoy each other. Talk about this question: What do we like doing for fun? Brainstorm destinations that would be fun to visit. Come up with separate lists, then compare and see what you have in common.

2. Set a budget. If your vacation costs more than you can afford, the expenses will add to your stress, both during the trip and afterwards (when the credit card bills come in). You can have a romantic honeymoon that stays within your budget and enjoy your memories forever (and avoid the debt).

3. Ask for help. Planning any kind of travel can be complex; if it were simple, you wouldn't be reading this blog! A good travel consultant will listen to the dreams you have for your honeymoon, respect your budget, do all the research, and offer you a few choices that you can talk over together. Whatever you may pay as a consulting fee, you will reap many times that investment in mistakes avoided, real value found, and a bottom line that you can afford. And, most of all, you will have a romantic honeymoon that's been planned by an expert so that all you have to do ... is enjoy it!

St. Regis Bora Bora is now Virtuoso

The premier 5 star luxury resort on Bora Bora, the St. Regis is now a member of Virtuoso. Copyright (c) 2007 by David J. Ourisman. All rights reserved. This article is published at http://TravelHorizons.blogspot.com. I am a Virtuoso travel consultant, specializing in luxury travel. Please visit my travel website at http://MetaphorTravel.com.

The St. Regis Bora Bora is a stunning new luxury hotel on the east side of the atoll of Bora Bora. The most basic "room" is a large and gorgeous 1,500 square foot villa with flooring of exotic woods, large flat panel televisions in both the bedroom and separate living room, and spacious and elegant bathrooms. If your priority is spare-no-expense luxurious accommodations, the St. Regis will be your choice.

But nobody goes to Bora Bora to watch a flatscreen t.v.! The attraction is the lagoon itself. You will be mesmerized by the amazing aquamarine color of the water the instant you leave the airport for the short boat trip back to your hotel. 80 degrees warm and teeming with colorful tropical fish, you can slip right into the water from your overwater bungalow and snorkel to your heart's content. (No dragging snorkels, flippers, masks, towels, and beach bags to the water). Bora Bora is the perfect destination to spend a honeymoon, unwind for a week or more, get back in touch with nature, or simply pamper yourself in a luxurious five star resort and spa.

And now that the St. Regis Bora Bora is a Virtuoso property, you can enjoy exclusive Virtuoso amenities at the Best Available Rate available for the dates of your visit. Upgrades, complimentary breakfasts, airport transfers, flower turndowns, late checkouts, even a bottle of champagne to celebrate your arrival in Paradise! Just book through a Virtuoso agent.

travel agent = added value?

Why would anyone use a travel agent? It's certainly easy enough to book travel yourself. Airlines, hotels, cruise lines, Amtrak, and virtually every other travel provider in the world has a web site. You can look at pictures, read descriptions, check availability, and scout out the lowest possible price.

If your first priority is finding the least expensive way to visit a given destination, then I encourage you to research and book on the web. It is well suited for comparison shopping. That's what the internet is best at!

If, however, you have other priorities, engaging a travel consultant may be well worth the investment. When might you want to work through a travel agent?

(1) You want to explore a destination you've never been to before. Travel consultants are travelers like everyone else, and -- like everyone else -- there are areas of the world to which each of us feels a certain connection, places to which we return time and again. For instance, my areas of special expertise are Paris and Bora Bora.

Find a travel consultant who specializes in the destination you want to visit. She or he will know the hotels, know the attractions, and have dozens of tips to offer. You'll get the trip you dreamed about at the price you want to pay, a well-designed itinerary, and you'll avoid the hassle, time, and potential missteps of trying to do it all on your computer.

(2) You have special requests such as early check-ins, late check-outs, upgrades, and rooms with a great view. A good travel agent has developed contacts with the hotels you want to visit, and those contacts can often accommodate your special requests (often, but not always). Here are some examples of requests I have recently helped my clients obtain:
  • a 9 p.m. late checkout from a hotel in Singapore
  • a suite at a Paris hotel with a direct view of the Eiffel Tower
  • upgrading a client at the time of booking from a regular room into a Villa
  • complimentary reservations in a pool cabana
  • a corner suite at a Hong Kong hotel with a confirmed view of the harbour
(3) You want luxury accommodations, but you want the best value for your dollar, pound, yen, or euro. Would you like to be able to enjoy breakfast via room service every morning at no extra cost? Would you like to be upgraded to the next room category, if there is a better room available when you check in? There are all sorts of complimentary amenities that hotels can offer including lunches and dinners, airport transfers, and spa treatments. These differ by property, but as the guest of a Virtuoso agent, you automatically receive those free perks.

Why would anyone use a travel agent? Because sometimes it helps to have someone with experience and connections on your side. And because, especially with luxury travel, the best values usually are not found on the internet.
