Aman New York suites revealed

Aman New York, located at the corner of 5th Avenue and W. 57th Street in the Crown Building (originally built in 1921, one hundred years ago). With an enviable location in midtown Manhattan, the hotel is just two blocks from Central Park and Fifth Avenue shopping. While the exact opening date is yet unknown, I've just gotten a first glimpse of the hotel's room product.

Suites have generous dimensions, a large living room adjoining a master bedroom. Room rates are yet to be announced ... but Aman New York promises to be a bucket list destination for Amanjunkies around the world.

Amazing what you can find on google maps. The eye-in-the-sky picture of Manhattan shows Central Park, the Plaza hotel, Trump Tower (the triangular building with the jagged southwest-facing facade), and quite a stretch of Madison Avenue (running north-south along the right edge of the picture.

I've drawn a red box around a building in the lower left of the picture. This is the Crown Building, a located at the corner of 57th Street and Fifth Avenue. A 26 story, neo-classical, beaux-arts building completed in 1921, it will become the home of the Aman New York. Here's what Aman has to say about their project:

Situated in the heart of Manhattan at the crossroads of Fifth Avenue and 57th Street, overlooking Central Park, Aman New York will occupy the iconic Crown Building. Embodying the splendour of the Gilded Age and dynamism of Fifth Avenue, the Crown Building is one of the most architecturally significant buildings in Manhattan.  

As it embarks on a new chapter, the Crown Building – formerly the first home of the Museum of Modern Art – will undergo a monumental transformation, which will see it fully restored to its original splendour and imbued with the spirit of Aman. 

Aman New York will comprise not only guest rooms and suites, but will also house the first urban Aman Residences, a collection of just 20 incomparable private homes. It will offer the unrivalled, intuitive service for which Aman is celebrated, providing peace and privacy in the most energetic and engaging city in the world. This new urban sanctuary, together with its fully serviced Aman Residences, will open in 2020.

Aman New York will occupy the entire building except for the first three floors of retail space. The hotel will have 83 guest rooms and suites, 19 private Aman Residences on the upper floors, and a five-story, park-view Penthouse at the peak of the building. The hotel will have three dining venues and a 22,000 square foot spa with 80-foot indoor pool.

I can't wait to see what Aman creates, but we'll have to wait until 2020 when New York's most aspirational hotel will be unveiled.

Greenwich Hotel | a unique NYC design hotel

One is immediately impressed, on entering the Greenwich Hotel, that this is a very unique hotel for Manhattan — or for anyplace else, for that matter. We were greeted at the front door by a doorman, dressed in a jacket and open shirt, who greeted us warmly while opening the door for us. Stepping into the lobby, we felt that we had entered a vintage living room from another era, with comfortable sofas and exposed wooden ceiling beams (fashioned from repurposed wood). In addition to the public lobby area (with a direct entrance into the adjoining restaurant, Locanda Verde), there is a private Drawing Room with wood-burning fireplace for guests only. The atmosphere is informal, casual, and funky.

I highly recommend the Greenwich for couples looking for a place in Manhattan to spend a romantic weekend. With just 88 rooms and suites, the property feels more like a B&B than a typical luxury hotel. Though just three years old, the hotel has a retro look and feel, each room being different by design. Reclaimed wood is used extensively for exposed beams and room doors. Wide oak planks are used for the floors, and high 10-foot ceilings throughout the property create a feeling of spaciousness.

Which room category to choose? Lead-in Courtyard Rooms overlook the central courtyard while Greenwich rooms have views into the hotel's TriBeCa neighborhood; these two lead-in room categories feel like Superior rooms at 395 square feet and offer Queen beds, single vanities, and a step-in shower. Higher room categories (Superior and Deluxe Greenwich rooms) and suites provide King beds, and some offer a soaking tub in addition to the step-in shower (most showers come with curtains instead of shower doors, so make a special request here if this is important to you). Suites are in high demand, and we were not able to see one during our site inspection as all were occupied at the time of our visit.

Complimentary WiFi is provided throughout the property, and the in-room mini-bars are complimentary as well, with the exception of alcoholic beverages. With an indoor pool, and a nice exercise room, The Greenwich Hotel offers an excellent value in lower Manhattan. Virtuoso guests receive room upgrades on arrival, subject to availability, in addition to a $25 per person breakfast credit and one $100 spa credit.
