Sleek, trendy, and friendly are the first three words that came to my mind when I stepped into the open-air lobby of Andaz Maui at Wailea Resort, located just north of the Shops at Wailea. Designed to give a sense of a modern Hawaiian beach house, this totally renovated resort was created within the existing walls of the former Renaissance. With 297 rooms and suites, the resort has five swimming pools open 24 hours (including one adult-only quiet pool), two full service restaurants — Ka'ana Kitchen and Morimoto Maui, three other more casual dining options, as well as a Spa. Complimentary services include a Kids Program, pool chairs and umbrellas, loungers on the beach, as well as everything non-alcoholic in your minibar. Wifi throughout the property is free and fast.
I spent one evening in an Andaz Ocean View Suite (a lot of space with 850 square feet). Because all of the regular guest rooms were completely occupied during my stay, I did not have a chance to inspect these rooms. However, the bedroom portion of my suite had pretty much the same size and design as guestrooms, I am able to make some observations.
Rooms are clean and simple, almost minimalistic. Cool white plaster walls, cool Ambrato marble tile floors, whitewashed oak paneling with teak furniture and walnut trim, white shuttered doors between the bedroom and bathroom. The bathroom has floors and walls of grey lava stone tile, two square sinks set in a wide teak slot vanity, deep oval soaking tub, and a shower whose glass wall can look out into the bedroom and the view outside your windows. Each room and suite has a private balcony.
I was particular impressed by the Premier Suite, the next category up from my Ocean View suite, with 1500 square feet of living space. A bit less minimalistic than guest rooms and lead-in suites, I found this Suite attractive to my aesthetic. For families, I can totally recommend a 2BR, 3BR, or 4BR Villa. These large Ocean Front accommodations directly face the Pacific, with full kitchens and washer/dryer.
You have a sense of space at Andaz Maui. With five pools and a wide and open green lawn leading up to the beach, there's plenty of room for all guests. Although all beaches on Hawaii are public, the only access to the Andaz's beach is through the resort, and there were just a handful of guests relaxing in the sun. Even though the resort was 98% full the evening I was there, I never had the sense that the place was overrun with guests.
