great American road trips | chapter 1

road in Napa (c) 2020 by David Ourisman, all rights reserved

It seems like the entire world is on lockdown. Italy has closed for business. Cruise lines have cancelled entire cruises. Hotels are relaxing cancel policies. And while aircraft flying with low load factors may be a boon to passenger comfort, airlines are grounding planes and cutting flights.

What to do? Travel local. In that vein, I'm starting a series of occasional articles I'm calling Great American Road Trips. I'll be exploring boutique resorts in bucolic destinations within easy driving distance of the cities where most of us live. There won't be a single big hotel on my list, and nothing located within a city or town with streets and sidewalks. The whole idea is to explore wide open spaces. In the words of the classic folk song of the American West
Home, home on the range,
where the deer and the antelope play,
where seldom is heard a discouraging word
and the skies are not cloudy all day.
By the way, I invite my hotel partners in secluded, rural settings to pitch me their best offers. If you can include a promotion exclusive to readers of Travel Horizons — and to my followers on Facebook — I'll feature it on this blog!

Four great ideas for the Napa Valley... I've stayed at — and loved — each of these. You can drive from San Francisco to any of these resorts in about 2 hours (depending on traffic, of course). Whether you love tasting great wine, enjoying Michelin-star cuisine, hiking on beautiful trails, or luxuriating in decadent spas, Napa is an ideal destination. If you travel mid-week, you'll benefit from lower prices.

Meadowood Napa Valley

St. Helena is a small town, population about 4,000, with tree lined streets. Ten minutes away (2.3 miles) by car is Meadowood. Located in its own mountain valley, Meadowood is far from the stress of city life. Its 85 rooms and suites are scattered across a 250 acre estate filled with Live Oak trees indigenous to the area. The entire resort has a light, informal New England feel. You can read about my latest stay here.

Carneros Resort and Spa

Carneros Resort is literally in the middle of the Carneros vineyard region, and many of its cottages have direct vineyard views just over the fence. I spent a Thanksgiving weekend at Carneros Resort in 2016; you can read about my stay here. Each of its 100 rooms is a 450 sq ft cottage that brings to mind the cottages in which vineyard workers used to live during the harvest (except, of course, for the cherry floors, gas fireplaces, and soaking tubs that today's guests enjoy). We loved our Thanksgiving dinner at Boon Fly Café!

Calistoga Ranch, an Auberge Resort

Calistoga is a small town, population just over 5,000, known for its hot springs. Calistoga Ranch is five miles from the town. Located at the northern end of the Napa Valley, this is the most remote of the four resorts in this article. Its 157 acres of woodlands are dotted with 50 stand-alone guest cottages. Floor-to-ceiling windows let in the outside in — you'll feel immersed in nature. What my wife loved best about Calistoga was its spa. Located at the top of the mountain valley, the spa has a casual woodsy feel. After your treatment, be sure to relax in its Healing Waters soaking pool, reserved for guest use only. Click here to read about our 2015 stay.

Auberge du Soleil

An adults-only resort, Auberge du Soleil was created due to the success of the successful Provencal restaurant opened by Claude Rouas in the Napa Valley. Restaurant guests would drive up from San Francisco, enjoy fine dining and a bottle (or two) of fine wine, and then what? It made sense to create a resort so that tired and buzzed diners would not have to drive back to the city in the dark. Out of that need came Auberge du Soleil. You should choose this resort if you're after a more elegant, less rustic feel. Only 50 rooms, I definitely recommend that you reserve one with a Valley View. Though it's not Virtuoso, Virtuoso guests will receive an upgrade at booking if available and an additional welcome amenity (i.e., a very nice bottle of wine); breakfast is included. Both Calistoga Ranch and Auberge du Soleil are featured in this 2015 article.

California wine country | open for business

field of mustard (c) 2017 by David Ourisman, all rights reserved

The tragic wildfires that blazed through the California wine country have devastated the lives of many people. Over 8,700 homes were destroyed in the fire, leaving so many people without their homes and possessions. Our hearts go out to so many who lost so much.

The tragedy has compounded as our travel partners in Napa and Sonoma are suffering from severely low occupancies. The tourism industry provides a living for so many residents ... and when guests stay away, the area's losses grow even larger.

Wine country is open for business ... and each of the following partner hotels has availability. Now is the time to visit Napa and Sonoma, support the area's economy, and (incidentally) enjoy a better chance of an upgrade.

planning a trip to wine country?

sunrise at Carneros Resort (c) 2016 by David Ourisman, all rights reserved

Picture yourself here. This is the sunrise, seen from the swimming pool at Carneros Resort. The pool is heated ... and the hot tub at the far end of the pool was especially heavenly. I sat in the warm water with the jets massaging my back, looking out over the vineyards in the valley beyond.

Thinking of a weekend getaway to Wine Country? Carneros Resort is the closest Virtuoso wine country resort to San Francisco, and we thoroughly enjoyed our stay last November. Our cottage was large, comfortable, and private, and the food was great — including our Thanksgiving dinner at Boon Fly Cafe.

Each Wine Country resort is different, so feel free to contact us for help in planning your vacation. We provide amenities at each of the following top luxury resorts in Napa and Sonoma County.

Carneros Resort | even better with age

landscaping matured: Harvest Suite at Carneros Resort, November, 2016

What a difference eight years can make! I last visited Carneros in September, 2008 (see my review here). At that time, the resort was sparking new ... as well as the landscaping. See the picture below from 2008 — very small plantings in front of the porch, and none of the newly planted trees were large enough to provide any meaningful shade or to frame the starkness of the new buildings.

eight years ago — Cottage in September, 2008

I recently spent two nights at Carneros Resort (the name just changed from Carneros "Inn"), and I can report that the landscaping is maturing nicely and will only get better with time. We enjoyed our stay very much. We stayed in Sycamore 7, a Harvest Cottage in the Sycamore group of cottages. This is a much requested location, as it's closest to the adult pool, spa, and guest-only restaurant.

All cottages have 450 square feet of indoor space featuring two easy chairs facing a gas fireplace and wall mounted television and a King or two double beds in the sleeping area, Brazilian cherry wood floors. The large bathroom had dual vanities, soaking tub, step-in shower, and WC. There is also 500-700 square feet of private outdoor space — ours had an outdoor bathtub and outdoor shower, although it was too chilly during our stay to take advantage. For a splurge, go for a Harvest Suite — 800 square feet of indoor space and a fire pit in your private garden.

Carneros Resort is at the southern end of the Napa Valley and has a convenient location for visiting wineries both in Napa and Sonoma Counties. Virtuoso amenities get even better in 2017 with a daily $60 breakfast credit per room (up from $40), a $100 spa credit, and upgraded room if available at check-in.

Carneros Resort | visit Napa

country road near Carneros Resort (c) 2016 by David Ourisman, all rights reserved

Carneros Resort and Spa is a resort in the Napa Valley wine country, just one hour north of San Francisco. We just spent two nights over Thanksgiving at Carneros — more about our stay in a later blog post — but yesterday we enjoyed a 4.3 mile walk on country roads near Carneros. The concierge can give you an easy-to-follow map.

Though the harvest is done, we still enjoyed some spectacular scenery — the luxurious curves of hillside planted with vines, red barns, small ponds reflecting trees clad in autumn colors, and the parallel lines so typical of wine country. I always say that travel is my excuse for photography ... and I came back from this trip with half a dozen favorites.

Though the sun was shining and the sky was blue, I decided to turn these photographs into black and white. I hope they give you a taste for what you can expect in the Carneros region of the Napa Valley.

2.19.2015

visiting the California Wine Country

Next week will take me to Napa County and Solano County, just north of San Francisco, for a site inspection trip to nine upscale inns and resorts in Wine Country.

This was supposed to have been a trip to Dubai, taking advantage of an incredible Ethiad Airways fare for travel consultants ... but, alas, it had to be ticked through Ethiad's New York ticket office and they would neither answer their phone (before it switched back over to the international agents) or answer their email. So instead of traveling 16 hours, I'll be going 45 minutes away from home in Berkeley.

A popular weekend and summer destination for oenophiles and gourmands, we will be staying at three different properties and visiting six others over our five days in Wine Country. We will be visiting three different Virtuoso member properties — Calistoga Ranch, Meadowood, and Fairmont Sonoma Mission Inn (a fourth, Carneros Inn, won't have any rooms to show because of being fully booked).

I'll also be doing inspections of six luxury resorts that are not Virtuoso — Hotel les Mars, Hotel Healdsburg, The Farmhouse, Kenwood Inn, Auberge de Soleil, and Bardessono. Hopefully most or all of these will make it onto my google map of Ourisman Travel's Preferred Hotels in Wine Country!

Be watching this space for my impressions of our trip to Napa and Sonoma next week.
