complimentary breakfasts at luxury hotels

Breakfast prices can sometimes seem frightening when staying at luxury hotels. Pictured above is a page from the room service menu at one of my very favorite hotels, the Beverly Hills Hotel. Many guests would want to order the American breakfast — for instance, two eggs with sausage, toast and a pastry, a fruit plate, a glass of freshly squeezed orange juice, and a Cappuccino. The price is $55 plus $3.75 pp for room service delivery, and 20% service. With sales tax, that's $75 per person. $150 for breakfast for two? That's too much!

Here's how to enjoy the same breakfast for free! Don't use the hotel's website, but reserve your stay through a Virtuoso travel advisor. He or she will book the Virtuoso rate (typically the same as the best available "regular" rate on the hotel's website). These are typical Virtuoso amenities at nearly 1500 luxury hotels and resorts around the world:

  • daily complimentary breakfast for two
  • an additional $100 hotel credit (usually for food & beverage or Spa services)
  • one category room upgrade at check-in if available

Virtuoso amenities are available at nearly 1,500 luxury hotels and resorts around the world. And even better than Virtuoso amenities are the preferred partner amenities a well-connected travel advisor can score for you at luxury chains. For instance, at the Beverly Hills Hotel (whose room service menu is pictured), my Diamond Club amenities will get you a confirmed upgrade at booking (up to the Jr. Suite category), a full breakfast in any venue including gratuities, and your $100 credit can come off the room rate room rate, if you wish.

You can check out Virtuoso amenities and book many Virtuoso hotels on virtuoso.com. Your Virtuoso travel advisor will be informed of your booking and will follow up by VIP'ing your stay with their contacts.

putting dollars back in your pocket

The logic of the internet compels shoppers to search, search, search for the absolutely lowest price they can find. The screenshot above shows the current nightly price for a 5-night stay in a lead-in room at a beachside resort at a Hilton-affiliated property. Many shoppers would probably think, "Wow... I should join Hilton Hhonors; it's free and I can save $24 a night!!!"

But booking this rate would be an expensive mistake. Sure, you'll save $24 per night ... but there's an even better value out there, Virtuoso! Even though the Virtuoso rate is equal to the regular rate of $616, here are three reasons reasons why it's the far better deal. At this particular hotel (the Waldorf Astoria in Los Cabos) ...
  • You'll receive two complimentary breakfast buffets daily.
  • You'll receive a one-time $150 Resort credit that you can use towards incidental expenses during your stay (like lunch, dinner, drinks, or spa treatments).
  • You'll be upgraded to a room with a better view if one is available at your check-in.

It's certainly a forgivable mistake. Most hotel shoppers don't know about Virtuoso, but now you do! If you're planning a stay at a luxury hotel, don't book on the hotel's website, and don't go to an OTA (an online travel agency such as expedia or hotels.com). Bookmark Virtuoso.com, and always start your hotel shopping there. You can book many Virtuoso hotels (but not all) right on the website and score those valuable amenities which put dollars back in your pocket. Some hotels don't have booking on the Virtuoso website, but just email your Virtuoso travel advisor who can quickly make the booking for you. Read this article to learn how you can make your own Virtuoso booking while we VIP your stay.

Knowing about Virtuoso can save you hundreds of dollars over the course of a typical hotel stay, money back in your pocket.

how to save hundreds of dollars on foreign travel

always choose the local currency — image from blog.wandr.me

Here are three tips to save big money on your next trip out of the country.

1. No-Forex. Make sure your credit card does not charge foreign exchange fees. Did you know that most credit cards tack on an extra 3% whenever you use your card outside the country? Fortunately, the solution is simple: get a No Forex credit card. While many no-forex cards come with annual fees (which may be worthwhile if you're collecting points, etc.), others are absolutely free — including some cards from Bank of America and Capital One.

2. Beware DCC (dynamic currency conversion). When paying your bill at a restaurant, hotel, or store, the credit card machine will often display a screen giving you the option to pay either in US dollars or the local currency. Always choose the local currency. Why? because Visa, MasterCharge, or Amex will always offer a much better exchange rate. If you choose to be charged in US dollars, you'll get a lousy conversion rate, paying as much as 5% more. And you'd still be subject to forex fees (unless you have a no-forex credit card) as the charge was made outside the US.

3. Virtuoso. Breakfast in a luxury hotel can cost you 35-50€ per person. Every day. You can save hundreds of dollars per hotel stay simply by booking through a Virtuoso travel advisor such as Ourisman Travel. It won't cost you a dime more, and you get:
  • daily complimentary breakfast for two
  • a unique amenity for each hotel (often a food & beverage credit) valued at $100 per stay
  • free internet access
  • an upgraded room if available at check-in
In fact, I know many hotels where you can take the hotel credit right off your bill and the upgrade is guaranteed at booking.

These three tips will save you hundreds of dollars on a typical trip out of the country.

now that your taxes are done...

Now that your taxes are done, how are you going to celebrate? A lot of CPA's will take the opportunity to leave the office and take a trip tomorrow. Everything ready to be filed with the IRS has been electronically transmitted, and extensions have been filed for all everyone else. It's the perfect time for accountants to take a week or two off for some rest and relaxation.

It's time to reward yourself, too! Today you filed your returns (or your extensions), so now is a great opportunity to consider your bucket list ... and decide how you want to invest your refund.

But when you travel, be sure to claim all your deductions.
  • Are you getting complimentary breakfast for two?
  • Are you getting a $100 food and beverage credit or spa credit to use during your stay, or a free airport transfer?
  • Does the front desk offer you an upgraded room when you check in (assuming one is available)?
If you can't check off all those boxes, you're leaving money on the table... and tens of thousands of luxury travelers make that mistake every day. It's easy to make a reservation yourself through a hotel website or an OTA, but a Virtuoso travel consultant will get you everything to which you're entitled (just like an experienced CPA can actually save you money on your taxes): complimentary daily breakfast, upgrades if available, and an additional credit typically worth $100 or more.

Drop me a line if you have any questions!

Ritz Paris | spend the night starting March 14, 2016

This is the hotel opening that I'm most excited about. After being closed for several years undergoing a thorough (and much needed renovation), the Ritz Paris is now taking reservations beginning as early as March 14, 2016.

I have enjoyed two stays at the Ritz Paris and appreciate its wonderful location right on the Place Vendome as well as the warmth of its service. If you loved the old Ritz, you'll love the new Ritz, as they've tried to keep the traditional ambiance of this iconic hotel. Even the original furniture has been preserved and completely renovated. The only difference will be the new, larger rooms and completely up-to-date systems — including fibre optic internet.

Don't miss out on the best set of Virtuoso amenities I've ever seen — just book through any Virtuoso travel consultant ... and we have absolutely no booking fees.
  • guaranteed room upgrade at the time of booking
  • complimentary roundtrip airport transfers
  • VIP greet at the airplane door
  • complimentary fiber optic internet access
  • complimentary daily breakfast for two at L'Espadon

the best peach jam | Ritz Carlton Atlanta

I recently received a jar of peach jam from the Ritz Carlton Atlanta. It's rare for me (or anyone else) to rave about a jar of jelly, but this was an incredible product. Made from organic white peaches grown in Georgia (where else?), this jam was custom made for the hotel.

Just open the lid and savor the aroma. It smells just like fresh white peaches. Want a jar? As it's a Limited Edition deal, you'll probably have to visit the hotel... but if you're visiting Atlanta anytime soon, I can get you complimentary breakfast for two — and hopefully a jar of this jam as your STARS welcome amenity.

Atlanta, anyone?

Heathrow countryside airport hotels

If you're traveling through London and need a hotel room near Heathrow Airport, you can always book one of the chain hotels right at the airport, or even the Sofitel Heathrow which is connected to Terminal 5. But you might also consider making it a special afternoon by staying at a nearby luxury hotel in the English countryside. Here are some great Heathrow countryside airport hotels (conveniently shown on this Google map).

Coworth Park is a member of Virtuoso, and we can get you the following amenities:
  • Upgrade on arrival, subject to availability
  • Daily full breakfast, for up to two in room guests
  • Complimentary one-way private airport transfers

Pennyhill Park (pictured above) is the recipient of 5-Red Stars, one of Britain's best hotels. Set in beautiful grounds, they have a two-Michelin star restaurant, as well as a brasserie for casual dining. Pennyhill Park is home to Europe's second largest spa. Rooms are spacious, and the bathrooms are a real feature of the hotel.

Great Fosters, dating from the 16th century, glows in historic splendor and was one of Queen Elizabeth I's hunting lodges. You can spend hours wandering the Tudor Gardens, and there are two terrific dining options. Guests booking Premier Executive rooms or higher receive complimentary airport transfers.

Cliveden is one of Britain's most famous stately homes, and the enchanting drive up to Cliveden is worth the price of admission. A scandalous affair here 50 years ago led to the fall of a Government, and since the days of Lady Astor, this has been a place to see and be seen. My clients can receive a guaranteed upgrade at booking and afternoon tea through my UK hotel guru!

The Runnymede-on-Thames offers value and location. The hotel sits right on the Thames in historic Runnymede where the Magna Carta was signed. Guests can enjoy a boat trip or simply stroll along the Thames and enjoy a pub nearby. Rates start under 200£ a night.

My clients receive complimentary breakfast at all five of these Heathrow countryside airport hotels.

Paris Virtuoso hotels in a google map

View Virtuoso Hotels of Paris in a larger map

A client recently called me with a question about the Virtuoso hotels of Paris. He had found a Google map which showed the locations of 13 Virtuoso hotels (and 2 former Virtuoso hotels) as well as the complimentary amenities each hotel offers guests who have booked through a Virtuoso travel consultant.

As he began describing what was written about several of the hotel on the map, I quickly realized that he had actually found my google map of the Virtuoso hotels of Paris! Curious, I asked what he had entered to find the map. The search terms? Paris Virtuoso hotels.

I have created 47 google maps of the Virtuoso hotels in nearly four dozen destinations around the world; here's an index. Each map shows the exact location (as best as I could determine) of the hotel, and if you click on the dot, a pop-up box will display the exclusive Virtuoso amenities that my clients receive free of charge. These include complimentary breakfast for two daily, room upgrades upon availability at time of check-in, and other amenities that vary by property but can include such perks as food and beverage credits, spa credits, or airport transfers.

A Virtuoso hotel is probably your best value for a stay in a luxury hotel. Here are the reasons why:

  1. Nearly 1000 hotels around the world are members of Virtuoso.
  2. Virtuoso clients typically get the best available flexible rate that everyone else pays.
  3. Valuable amenities can save you hundreds of dollars per stay.
  4. No need to prepay in full, unlike many internet booking engines. Virtuoso guests pay at check-out.
  5. Enjoy the same cancellation window as booking yourself, typically 1-2 days before arrival.
  6. No booking fees for clients of Ourisman Travel.

$700 business class round-trip to Paris?

Is it possible to pay as little as $700 for a round-trip business class ticket from Washington Dulles to Paris Orly? Including taxes and fees? According to Joe Brancatelli, the answer is "yes," for a very short-term deal. Check out this deal from OpenSkies. The fare requires a Saturday night stay and is good only for travel in October.

And after you've grabbed your bargain airfare to Paris, contact me to book your Virtuoso hotel in Paris. My three favorite Paris hotels are:

Four Seasons George V (for the absolute best of the best)

Le Meurice (a great five star in the perfect location, with very reasonable rates for a luxury hotel)

InterContinental Paris Le Grand (if money is tight, the Grand is a great value)

At any of these Virtuoso hotels, you'll receive exclusive amenities including complimentary daily breakfast - and a discounted room rate at Le Meurice or Le Grand.

a great time for luxury travel to Europe

Want some counter-intuitive advice? This is an ideal time to think about luxury travel to Europe. Here are four reasons why:

1. Great exchange rates. The US dollar has gotten much stronger over the past three months. You'll be paying considerably less for your hotel room, meals, and sightseeing while in Europe and the United Kingdom. Here are the numbers, comparing July 15 to today (October 23).
  • The price of one EURO has dropped from $1.60 to $1.28, a discount of nearly 20%
  • The price of one POUND has dropped from $1.96 to $1.62, a savings of more than 17%.
This is the best exchange rate in five years!

2. Discounted room rates. The economic downturn has made many upscale travelers nervous about taking expensive trips. I can tell you, as a luxury travel consultant, that bookings have dropped significantly over the past few weeks ... and cancellations are up. This means lots of empty hotel rooms, and empty rooms motivate hoteliers to lower their prices and create special promotional packages to fill those rooms.

3. Valuable free amenities. You can get complimentary breakfasts, room upgrades, and other free amenities that can include lunch, dinner, spa treatments, or limousine transfers. How? Simply by booking through a Virtuoso travel consultant. Best of all, many hotels offer these amenities at the Best Available Rate. You pay less and get more.

4. Less crowds. When less people are traveling, you don't need to deal with crowds and long lines at the attractions you want to see.

I have always been a contrarian. When everyone else is buying ... it's an ideal time to sell. When everyone else is selling ... it's an ideal time to buy. This is one of those opportune times. With some very real values out there in the luxury travel market, this is a great time to plan a luxury trip to Europe.

where to stay in Whistler, BC?

Whistler, BC is an all-season resort. A world-class ski destination in winter, Whistler will host the alpine events for the 2010 Winter Olympics. In summer, Whistler is an outdoor wonderland that offers even more to do. Whether you enjoy hiking, mountain biking, kayaking, or golf, consider a summer vacation in Whistler. Convenient to Vancouver, BC, there are major improvements underway on the Sea to Sky Highway, and when complete, the hour-and-a-half drive will become even easier.

Where to stay? During a brief visit to Whistler, I made site inspections of the two Virtuoso hotels. The Four Seasons and the Fairmont are adjacent properties in the Upper Village, and each features a short walk to the slopes. The picture above is of the Fairmont and was taken from a balcony from a room at the Four Seasons.

Four Seasons Whistler is a four year old resort. Typical of Four Seasons properties, the hotel features large, comfortable rooms -- starting at 500 square feet -- with large bathrooms with separate tub and shower. Deluxe rooms have a balcony and a spacious sitting area that includes a Queen sofa bed; Premium rooms provide a direct mountain view. In suites, doors between the bedroom and living room create two private sleeping areas. Four Seasons Deluxe Executive Suites have two full bathrooms for the ultimate comfort for a family of four. While in Whistler, I highly recommend having a meal at Fifty Two 80, whether you're a guest at the Four Seasons or staying elsewhere. We had a great dinner there.

Something special for families. Consider a stay in one of Four Seasons' Private Residences. Located in a separate building, these are individually owned residences, available in 2, 3, and 4 bedroom configurations with beautiful gourmet kitchens (Viking ranges and Sub Zero refrigerators). Four Seasons can provide a Chef to prepare meals for your family in your own kitchen, a great idea for a special holiday dinner in Whistler. Rates are comparable to booking the same number of bedrooms in the hotel.

The Ski Concierge service provides the ultimate in convenience for skiers. Upon your arrival at Four Seasons Whistler, all of your ski equipment will be taken by hotel staff directly to the Ski Concierge facility located immediately at the base of the slopes. Just a five minute stroll from the front door of the hotel, you can put on your boots and skis here and step right onto the chair lift; the entrance is immediately to the right of the facility pictured here. At the end of the day, the process is reversed; leave your equipment with the Ski Concierge and walk back to the Four Seasons. Upon check-out, all of your equipment will be delivered to the hotel entrance for your trip back home. Enjoy all the convenience of an ski-in, ski-out experience!

Fairmont Chateau Whistler sits at the foot of the slopes, literally a ski-in, ski-out location. Offering very attractive pricing (with a further discount for Virtuoso guests), the Fairmont provides comfortable 400 square foot guest rooms. Fairmont rooms look south across the village of Whistler to the mountains beyond; Fairmont Deluxe rooms look toward the ski slopes. For a step above, consider the Fairmont Gold floor. With its own concierge and private check-in, rooms on the Gold Floor offer very attractive contemporary interior design, fireplaces, and a large bathroom with separate tub and shower and double vanities. The Lounge has an omelette chef in the morning and offers hors d'oeuvres every afternoon.

How to get free internet at Fairmont. Here's a tip from the sales staff of the Fairmont Chateau Whistler. Join the Fairmont Presidents Club, the chain's frequent guest program (there's no charge!), and enjoy complimentary in-room internet.

For the best values at these properties, or at over 740 hotels and resorts around the world, simply book through a Virtuoso luxury travel consultant. You'll enjoy the benefits of negotiated pricing, complimentary daily breakfasts, a room upgrade when available at check-in, and extra amenities that can include discounts on spa treatments or complimentary cocktails.

Ritz Paris | VIP airport privileges at CDG

Hotel Ritz Paris is about to make your trip to Paris infinitely more enjoyable from the moment you land at CDG. There's not a shred of luxury in the typical airport experience. Terminals are crowded. Lines are long. Security screening is inefficient. And service? First class service ends the moment you step off the plane and enter the terminal.

Of all the international airports in the world, perhaps none is quite so inefficient as Charles de Gaulle in Paris. As soon as you step onto the jetway, you join throngs of passengers from all the other international flights to be herded through immigration and customs.

Let me entertain your imagination for a moment. What might a VIP welcome at Charles de Gaulle look like? Let's indulge our fantasies...
  • What if, the moment you stepped off the aircraft, you were greeted by a hostess waiting just for you?
  • What if this hostess ensured that you had privileged transit through security and passport control?
  • What if she collected your luggage for you?
  • What if she escorted you to your waiting limousine in front of the arrivals terminal?
  • What if you were whisked off to your Paris hotel in a Mercedes Class E limousine?
  • And what if this service cost you nothing?
This is not a fantasy. This is a complimentary amenity reserved exclusively for Virtuoso guests at the Ritz Paris from May 15 - Dec. 27, 2007.

Permit me to further indulge your fantasies. What if you could receive similar VIP airport privileges upon your departure from Paris? You will of course be driven to CDG in a Mercedes limousine.
  • Upon your arrival at the airport, you will be led to a private lounge where you can relax.
  • Your hostess will take care of check-in and luggage registration for you.
  • She will also take care of any tax-free procedures.
  • You will have the privilege of seat selection and will be guaranteed a seat even if the flight is overbooked.
(Alas, you will have to pay for your return-trip VIP airport fantasy).

Hotel Ritz Paris, one of the most elegant 5 star luxury hotels in world, is a member of Virtuoso. Your Virtuoso travel consultant can provide you with excellent negotiated rates, an upgrade at the time of booking, continental breakfast for two daily in the restaurant or by room service, as well as VIP treatment throughout your stay at this ultimate Parisian luxury hotel. And, lest you forget, VIP airport privileges at Charles de Gaulle, coming and going.

Why would anyone book the Ritz Paris any other way?

INTERNET SPECIAL: mention Travel Horizons, and I will book the Ritz Paris for you, or any Virtuoso hotel anywhere in the world, with absolutely no service or booking fees.

St. Regis Bora Bora is now Virtuoso

The premier 5 star luxury resort on Bora Bora, the St. Regis is now a member of Virtuoso. Copyright (c) 2007 by David J. Ourisman. All rights reserved. This article is published at http://TravelHorizons.blogspot.com. I am a Virtuoso travel consultant, specializing in luxury travel. Please visit my travel website at http://MetaphorTravel.com.

The St. Regis Bora Bora is a stunning new luxury hotel on the east side of the atoll of Bora Bora. The most basic "room" is a large and gorgeous 1,500 square foot villa with flooring of exotic woods, large flat panel televisions in both the bedroom and separate living room, and spacious and elegant bathrooms. If your priority is spare-no-expense luxurious accommodations, the St. Regis will be your choice.

But nobody goes to Bora Bora to watch a flatscreen t.v.! The attraction is the lagoon itself. You will be mesmerized by the amazing aquamarine color of the water the instant you leave the airport for the short boat trip back to your hotel. 80 degrees warm and teeming with colorful tropical fish, you can slip right into the water from your overwater bungalow and snorkel to your heart's content. (No dragging snorkels, flippers, masks, towels, and beach bags to the water). Bora Bora is the perfect destination to spend a honeymoon, unwind for a week or more, get back in touch with nature, or simply pamper yourself in a luxurious five star resort and spa.

And now that the St. Regis Bora Bora is a Virtuoso property, you can enjoy exclusive Virtuoso amenities at the Best Available Rate available for the dates of your visit. Upgrades, complimentary breakfasts, airport transfers, flower turndowns, late checkouts, even a bottle of champagne to celebrate your arrival in Paradise! Just book through a Virtuoso agent.
